What Is a Personallity Type and How Does That Define Me?
Do your personality traits change and evolve?
As I have aged over the years and been involved in many different organizations, boards, jobs, and teams I have realized I do have some set traits.
Recently at work, we had to take a survey and find out what our DiSC placement was.
I was slightly surprised at where I fell on the circle and what that meant for me.
Of course, I assume traits can change and evolve over time and if I would have taken this test about five years ago I would have placed extremely different, but some traits have carried through my existent so far. So depending on the situation humans can change and adapt their personalities to suit the mood, can't they?
Here are some set trait examples for specific personalities on the DiSC circle.
Dominance
• Direct
• Firm
• Strong-willed
• Forceful
• Results-oriented
influence
• Outgoing
• Enthusiastic
• Optimistic
• High-spirited
• Lively
Conscientiousness
• Analytical
• Reserved
• Precise
• Private
• Systematic
Steadiness
• Even-tempered
• Accommodating
• Patient
• Humble
• Tactful
So I landed smack dab in the center of the D category. Not leaning into the Di or DC, right in the middle of the D. I was kind of shocked because I thought of myself as a lot of the other traits. Maybe only when I need them? I suppose I can have other traits but these are the most common to me? It's sort of strange to think a quiz can place you on a chart and explain your life to you. I guess that's why I'm not a psychologist.
There are a few things I have realized growing up and working with other people.
A) everyone is human
B) everyone thinks differently
C) not everyone wants to be your friend
D) sometimes you need to let go and move on
Recently I had to step down from a board that I enjoyed being a part of. I realized that my purpose on the board was no longer needed and I was no longer feeling fulfilled. So I did the right thing and stepped down. Was it a clash of personality traits?
So back to the main point, can your traits change and evolve? I think they do and I think depending on the environment you put yourself into you can become more like others to 'fit in' hide some traits to protect yourself.
